Gatherings of Zikr

E-mail Print PDF

Q: What is Halqah Zikr?

A:
Your question on Halq-e-zikr refers. THis means a circle or gathering of zikr. This is when a group of people sit together and engage in the zikr of Allah. The halqas of zikr are mentioned in the hadith as well, where it is explained that the Angels of Allah surround and witness such a gathering wherein the zikr of Allah is made

A halqa of zikr is permissible on the following conditions:

No mixed gatherings
No music or drums
No disturbance to people reading salaah or sleeping
No eating and drinking, and/or merry-making

And Allah Ta'ala knows best

Zikr of Ya Ghaus Almadad

E-mail Print PDF

Q: Is the zikr of 'Yaa Ghaus Almadad' permissible and if not is salaat permissible behind a imam who makeS this zikr in his weekly zikr program together with the salami etc while standing? What is the state of iman (faith) of the person?

A. The Zikr of 'Yaa Ghaus Almadad' is not permissible because the person chanting this is calling for help from Hadhrat Abdul Qaadir Jilani (Rahmatullaahi Alayh) who was a very pious, saintly person. But, like any other dead human, he has no power to help anyone. A person who asks directly from the dead with the belief that the deceased can help has committed an act of Shirk.

It is not permissible to appoint such a person as Imam, but Salaah behind him is valid. If one is able to read Salaah behind another Imam who has correct beliefs, then it is not permissible to follow such an Imam in Salaah.

Moulana Rumi and Whirling Zikr

E-mail Print PDF

Q: Are the sufi practices of Moulana Rumi such as the whirling Zikr acceptable in Islam and can he be considered to be a Wali (saint)?

A.
Moulana Jalaaluddeen Rumi (Rahmatullaahi Alayh) was a Wali of a very high ranking, an Aalim and a master of Tasawwuf.

To attribute the 'whirling Zikr' to him is wholly incorrect. He never did this. This has been attributed to him by people who are unaware of him and his teachings.

Mufti Siraj adds:

The Sufis of old had a practice called Simaa’. This was a gathering of Sufis who were all 40 years of age or older, in which they would recite poems in Praise of Allah Ta'aala and His Rasool (Sallallaahu Alayhi wa Sallam). Due to their strong Love for Allah and His Rasool, these poems would have an extremely invigorating and inspiring effect on their hearts and souls, and would enhance their spiritual effulgence tremendously. In this gathering there were no dancing, or any musical instruments. Moulana Jalaaluddeen Rumi and his contemporary Sufis participated in this Simaa’.

However, later on this Simaa’ was modernized to include dancing and music, thus giving rise to the concept of “whirling dervishes”. This is a Bid’ah and is not the creation of orthodox Sufism.

Rewards for Zikr

E-mail Print PDF
Q: What are the rewards of zikr after the fajr and asr salaah and is it sunnah or fardh?

A: To make Zikr after Fajr and Asr is Sunnah, not Fardh. There are great rewards mentioned for Zikr during these two times. We mention some Ahaadeeth below.

Rasoolullah Sallallaahu Alayhi wa Sallam) said : “For me to sit with a group of people making the Zikr of Allah from after Fajr to sunrise is greater that setting free four slaves from the progeny of Ismail (Alayhis Salaam).” Another narration states: “To sit with a group of people making Zikr from after Asr to sunset is more dearer to me than the entire world and whatever it contains.”
(Kanzul-Ummaal, vol.1 p. 420)

In yet another Hadeeth it appears: “One who offers Fajr Salaah and remains seated in his place making the Zikr of Allah, then offers two Rakaats (Ishraaq) Salaah, gets the reward of a complete Hajj and Umrah.” (Al-Azhkaar of Imam Nawawi).
